Description
Euphorbia lactea ‘Cristata’, also known as the Crested Elkhorn, is a striking, sculptural succulent with wavy, fan-like growth resembling coral. Despite its cactus-like appearance, it belongs to the Euphorbia family rather than the cactus family. It is often grafted onto a hardier rootstock like Euphorbia neriifolia for better stability and growth.
Care Guide
🌞 Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light or partial sun. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but should be protected from intense afternoon sun to prevent burns.
💧 Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot.
💦 Humidity: Prefers low to moderate humidity. Ensure proper airflow to prevent fungal infections.
🌡️ Temperature: Grows best in warm temperatures (65–85°F / 18–29°C). Not frost-hardy, so protect it from temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
🌱 Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix is ideal. Adding sand or perlite enhances drainage.
🪴 Fertilization: Feed once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer.
✂️ Pruning: Requires minimal pruning; remove any rotting or damaged sections with sterile tools.
⚠️ Toxicity: Contains a milky latex sap that is toxic and can cause skin irritation or be harmful if ingested. Handle with gloves.
Flowering
While Euphorbia lactea ‘Cristata’ can technically produce small, inconspicuous flowers, it rarely blooms, especially when grown indoors. The unique crested growth is its main attraction rather than its flowers.
